God gave me feet for dancing

Date

2026

Medium

Painting

In this series I explore dance as a universal language, both intimate and collective. Dance becomes a meeting place between heritage and the future, connecting continents, histories, and identities. The bodies I depict do not seek to perform; they exist fully within the movement, sometimes heavy, sometimes light, always in transformation. They lean, float, almost fall, seeking balance. Transformation is nothing other than a body in motion. I am interested in that fragile moment right in the middle of movement. That moment between control and surrender that allows new things to emerge. That moment where either fear or faith reigns. To dance is to lose oneself in the music, in oneself, in space, or in the other, and then to find oneself again.

The series is titled after the song God gave me feet for dancing by Ezra collective. Some of the paintings share their titles with songs (for example Loose Ends by Loyle Carner and Jorja Smith). The painting our feet were made for dancing is an hommage to Malick Sidibé and his famous photograph "Nuit de Noël".
